Traveling with the whole family can be so enriching and rewarding, as you watch your kids’ eyes fill with wonder and you all bond over shared discoveries.
But sometimes (okay, maybe a lot of the time), you want to leave the kids at home and have an indulgent, romantic escape with your partner. A grown-up getaway allows you to reconnect on a more meaningful level, step out of your “parent” roles for a bit, and re-engage with the interestsyou don’t normally get to pursue on a family vacation.
If a just-us-two escape is long overdue for you, then keep reading. Here are my top three destinations ideal for a parent’s getaway, along with luxury property recommendations. All three ideas are easy to get to, and would make an ideal homebase for a week-long or less vacation (since you might not be able to leave the kids at home for much longer than that!).
If your main goal is to simply relax and reconnect, head south to Turks and Caicos. The island archipelago lies just south of the Bahamas, meaning you don’t have to fly too far to experience this tropical paradise. Turks and Caicos is famed for its gorgeous beaches featuring powdery sand, clear turquoise waters, and calm bays. What I especially love about these islands is that they’re not as overrun by sprawling all-inclusive resorts like other Caribbean hotspots like the Dominican Republic or Cancun. You can absolutely have an intimate, romantic experience at a luxury boutique property, perfect for some island pampering. If you can tear yourselves away from the beach, Turks and Caicos offers excellent snorkeling opportunities as well!
Stay at: The Palms Turks & Caicos. Nestled on gorgeous Grace Bay Beach, this stunning all-suite resort offers amazing ocean views, a huge infinity pool, and a 25,000-square foot spa.
Head to the majestic Rocky Mountains for an active escape, where you’re surrounded by pristine natural beauty at any time of year. Beaver Creek is an upscale mountain community that makes the perfect homebase for grown-up mountain fun. In the winter, the area turns into a snowy wonderland, with pristine ski runs and cross-country routes. But Beaver Creek is a great destination for the summer, too, when the mountains are blanketed with wildflowers and hiking trails with incredible vantage points beckon you.
Stay at: The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch. This posh property is sure to elevate your active adventure with its rustic chic alpine-inspired design, ski in/ski out privileges, and indulgent spa.
Calling all wine and food lovers: Napa Valley is a delightfully indulgent escape for all the senses—and it’s the perfect place to explore sans kids. Enjoy picturesque drives through the rolling, vine-studded hills of this famed wine region, pulling off for tastings at select wineries (you can even hire a private driver so the both of you can enjoy each tasting to its fullest). This fertile area of California isn’t just known for its wine, but its culinary chops. Splurge on a visit to the iconic French Laundry for white-tablecloth fine dining done right, or try the more casual Mustards Grill, which has been a local favorite for 30+ years.
Stay at: Archer Hotel Napa. This chic boutique hotel is located in the heart of downtown Napa, making it a convenient home base for all your wine country exploring.
